2 VERY ≠ SCENES------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FLORE NOVÉ-
JOSSERAND1 May – 26 June 2009
Siobhan Davies Studios, 85 St George’s Road, London, SE1 6ER
Siobhan Davies Studios is pleased to present a new exhibition of works by French-born artist Flore Nové-Josserand.
2 very ≠ scenes is a specially conceived sculptural installation for Siobhan Davies Studios that stretches across two floors of the Studios architecturally acclaimed building. It extends the artist’s fascination with the meeting-point between sculptural object, painted surface and architectural environment explored in her recent solo exhibition P.18 at BISCHOFF/WEISS Gallery (2008).
On the ground floor is presented 2 very ≠ scenes (Part 1) (2009) a series of vertical ‘totemic’ sculptural elements, visually identical they are divided by height into three groupings. The tallest (close to eight feet tall) stand propped, acting as a visual backdrop and stage, the next in height mimic the standing height of an adult, while the shortest pieces are child size. This relationship to different scales of human height is made evident as viewers are invited to walk close-to or in places through the work. The vertical ‘totems’ are each unified by a repeating geometric pattern painted across their surface, collectively they create an optically vibrating environment, interacting with and disrupting the existing visual fabric of the building, such as the close-by criss-crossed mesh and vertical pillars of the studio’s suspended staircase.
Located on the 3rd floor is the work 2 very ≠ scenes (Part 2) (2009), a work that extends Nové-Josserand’s examination into the relationship between object, design, function and architecture. Here a single small ‘totem’ column takes on new associations, located beneath a small painting of red brickwork it becomes plant-like in its domestic appearance and scale. The painting hangs on a section of white wall that corners onto a brick wall which itself houses a small section of white-wall space within a filled-in alcove finished in white plaster. This careful interaction with an existing architectural feature highlights the specificity of the work’s location, reflecting the large number of highly particular architectural and design decisions made throughout the building.
2 very ≠ scenes presents a series of independent elements whose structure and appearance repeats but whose reading is subject to constant change. In creating works that sit close to the boundaries of sculpture, painting, theatre and design Flore Nové-Josserand carefully asks us to consider the role and function of the visual within the environments that we chose to create, and those we find ourselves inhabiting.
This is the third exhibition at Siobhan Davies Studios curated by Charles Danby.
